So Want to Start an Online Business Part 2 - Keyword Analysis

Continued from Part One of 'So You Want to Start an Online Business'; We are getting a list of keywords you developed and further expand, eliminate, and analyze each one. The end result is a solid set of keywords and phrases that is highly improve your chances of top placement in search engines with your chosen market.

If followed by exercises from Part One should You have a good solid list of keywords to work with. If you are not, please return to Part One of this article and build keyword lists first. Your list should consist of all possible relevant keywords for your market, including general very very specific keywords.
So lets get down to study.

A free tool that I use repeatedly is called 'Good Keywords' and is available for download http://www.goodkeywords.com/products/gkw/. Go get it first as we use it extensively for this part of the project.

Developing your keywords is the most important part of building your online business. The keywords you select are important to your success. Selection of top keywords that generate too many occurrences search, and that is too competitive would make it difficult if not impossible for the average person to get top-level placement in major search engines. Selection keywords that receive very little search volume will get you much at the top of search engines, but since nobody actually search for keywords; you will not receive any traffic. Therefore, I can not stress enough the importance of choosing the right keywords. Spending a lot of time doing research and brainstorming for part of your online business will pay off ten fold in the end results.
So how do we analyze keywords? We analyze them one at a time. It may seem a bit tedious but pace yourself, take breaks if you need to, walk away from it and come back later.

We start with the list you developed in Part One of this series. When you open the 'Good Keywords' tool, you are presented with a menu. From this menu select 'Keyword Suggestions'. This will open another window where you can enter your first keyword into the box provided. Below this box you'll see an option 'Research Use '. Here you can select the engine you want to retrieve data from. Overture U.S. should be the default. If it does not then lets choose Overture from the drop down list. Depending on how you plan to market your website can change the 'Research Use' engine. I'll discuss this in more details in an upcoming article on Marketing Your Website For Performance or PPC.

For the purpose of this exercise lets enter the keyword phrase 'Santa Letter' and click 'Go'. Once you receive a message 'lookup failed'. This is normal and simply means the server is too busy. If this happens just click 'Go' again until you receive the results in the right hand window. From my search I received 92 results. Can see from the list there are many variations of the phrase Santa Letter. What you see is incremental recent results from Overture's search any database containing the keyword phrase 'Santa Letter'. The numbers on the right of each keyword is the number of times that particular phrase is to search for the last 30 days in Overture.

Now if you have compiled a list of keywords for the phrase before using this tool and then you may have some of the returns of keywords in your list. That's good! This means that you are fully in your research keyword phrases.
Now let's have a look at the list to see what keywords are relevant for us. I am looking for keywords for a campaign or website offers Letters from Santa for children or loved ones at Christmas time. Immediately I see one phrase 'free from letter santa'. This is not a phrase I am going want to use as I was trying to sell a service providing letters from Santa for a fee. So you can see that not all the results are relevant our particular website. What we do is go through the list and select we want. First, let return to the main menu for Good tools Keywords. We have to click 'Keyword Organizer'. In the window that opens select 'Keyword Set Menu' and then click 'Add Keyword Set '. Now in this window type 'Santa Letter' and click OK. This has created a new set of Keywords and give us a place in our stores keyword research for a particular phrase. Now back to 'Keyword suggest' window, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboards. You'll see one on the left and right part of your keyboard at the very bottom row. While holding down Ctrl, mouse, click on a couple of keywords you want to include in your keyword list. Just for the purpose of exercises that we will select the 'Santa letters' and 'letter from Santa'. The selection is highlighted if done correctly. Using the right button mouse, right click on your second choice, go to the Copy to Organizer and choose 'Selected Keywords'. Using the drop down menu, select 'Santa Letter 'and click the OK button. This is just copy the keywords you've selected the category 'Santa Letter' Keyword Organizer 'tool. To verify this, lets go back to Keyword Organizer for a minute. Click on Santa Letter and you will see your keywords. It gives us a way of keeping track of only the keywords that we want while eliminating some of the confusion from a massive list. Usually, for your own list, would you repeat this process for each of your keywords and keyword phrases you choose. For the purpose of this exercise we will only use the two phrases selected.

Okay so if your still with me, lets go back to 'Keywords Selection' tool which should still have a list of keyword Results for 'Santa Letter'. Using the mouse, allows double-click on 'personalized Santa letter' to the list.
What happens? Double clicking on this keyword causes the tool to re-send that one in particular back to the Overture keyword to be analyzed. The result is a more depth analysis documents the diversity of particular phrases. You will probably have fewer results than your initial search, however it is an important part of the keyword analysis. You can do this step for any keyword in the list but for example if you try it on top of the keyword is actually the result same as the original result. Why? Because it's the same two words only in the reverse order, so the tool will return the same result.

People omit this part of the process of building keyword miss out on huge opportunities niche markets.
Now again, as we could before you right click on whatever keywords you want to add to your list and copy them over the keyword tool organizer. Because it is just an example and we covered that I feel it is necessary to repeat this process. Also, you can and should continue your research by double clicking on any phrase you added it from the new list. I personally follow each and every relevant phrase right until the end where no more results are returned. Be sure to continue to add each new keywords for 'Keyword Organizer'. This is your final list to be used when building and marketing your site.

Now I'm sure you have few questions at this point about keywords. For example, how many keywords can I use for my website. Opinions will vary. I have seen recommendations using a maximum of 25 keywords. Keep the following in mind.

A large part of optimizing your website for top spot search engine is the relationship between 'content' and keywords. It is defined as the 'Keyword Density' and be the subject of the third stage of 'So You Want To Start Online Business'. Exactly what they are referring to is using your chosen keywords in the content of your website, with optimal area and also an optimal number occurrences. It is possible to use a keyword too many and was really hurt you in your placement on search engines. No keywords content on your website or too small also hurts your site, as have the keyword in the wrong place. There are many tools available to guide you through the process it.
