What Royce Gracie did in UFC could this be the new ground fighting?

ok this is going to be short and sweet.
probably i will be wrong.

now its always used.

could the same be done with aerial fighting IE jumping punches and kicks?
give me a few reasons why it wouldnt work?

"Aerial fighting" just won't work against a good counter striker or grappler for a few reasons:

You can only be in the air for a tiny fraction of the time that you are fighting, and you are on a specific trajectory from the moment your feet leave the ground. Like a baseball, you can't just turn in mid air and land somewhere else. That leaves a striker who focuses mainly on jumping techniques very vulnerable while in the air.

When you are moving forward through the air, your center mass is really difficult to defend. Strikes like flying knees or superman punches may be effective on occasion, but if you rely exclusively on them, you are open to a counter strike, particularly to the body. Also, once you throw a punch, you have committed, moreso when it's a flying punch. If the punch misses, and most punches do at some point, you are wide open for a clinch/takedown. Think of someone slipping past a superman punch and hitting you right in the body with their shoulder for a basic trip or a double-leg takedown. Reasonably easy to do.

When you land, you are more likely to be off balance, and even if you are properly balanced, your legs and body are compressed, therefore stationary. If you aren't moving you can be hit quite easily, and if you are off balance it's even easier.

Simply due to timing and balance issues, a reasonably talented counter puncher or a patient grappler would decimate a person that focused on "aerial fighting".
